Wuling Air EV

2026-09-22 18:40:00

Model Overview

The Wuling Air EV is the first global new energy vehicle (NEV) introduced by SAIC-GM-Wuling, known as "Qingkong" in Chinese and built on the GSEV global light mobility intelligent architecture. The right-hand drive (RHD) model made its global debut in Indonesia in August 2022, serving as an official shuttle at the G20 Bali Summit, followed by the left-hand drive (LHD) version's launch in China in December 2022. Positioned as a "quality second car for households", it caters to urban drivers seeking smart and refined urban runabouts. Its original manufacturer's recommended retail price (MRRP) in China ranged between RM67,800 and RM82,800, before a strategic price revision lowered the entry price point to RM57,800 onwards in 2026.

Design Language

The Air EV features a minimalist exterior design, headlined by a full-width LED daytime running light (DRL) bar that extends seamlessly into the wing mirror turn signals, creating a floating light signature; mounted below are split dual-lens headlamp clusters that deliver high visual recognition when lit. Its boxy silhouette is complemented by vertically elongated rear side windows—inspired by airplane first-class cabin portholes—enhancing natural cabin light and an airy sense of space. The EV is offered in four exterior body colours: White, Blue, Grey, and Coffee. Inside, the minimalist and cohesive theme continues with a choice of dark or light dual-tone trims, where the dashboard artfully blends ceramic white, leatherette upholstery, and metallic accents into three distinct zones: air-con vents and cup holders, soft-touch tactile panels, and the digital interactive control console.

Powertrain and Performance

The Air EV is available in two-seater and four-seater configurations, each running a distinct powertrain setup. The two-seater version is driven by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor rated at 30 kW and 110 Nm of torque, tailored primarily for standard AC charging routines; the four-seater variant gets a punchier 50 kW motor delivering 140 Nm of torque. In the 0-50 km/h sprint, the four-seater variant clocks in at just 4.8 seconds, with a top speed capped at 100 km/h. Powering the entire range is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, providing a CLTC-rated electric driving range of up to 300 km. When it comes to charging, the four-seater supports DC fast charging, taking around 45 minutes to juice up from 30% to 80% SoC, alongside AC wallbox and 3-pin domestic socket charging support.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the Air EV rides on a front MacPherson strut independent setup and a rear three-link non-independent suspension, featuring a neatly laid underbody tuned for composed stability. The two-seater model boasts a remarkably tight turning radius of just 3.7 metres, which, coupled with electric power steering (EPS), makes darting through congested city streets and tight alleys effortless. The powertrain offers three selectable drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—with Sport sharpening the initial throttle response, while the regenerative braking system comes with three adjustable levels calibrated for smooth, jerk-free deceleration. NVH levels are also well-sorted, backed by over 30 dedicated acoustic tests that keep wind and tyre noise well suppressed for its segment.

Cabin and Equipment

Taking centre stage in the cabin is a dual 10.25-inch integrated screen setup powered by Wuling’s in-house Ling OS, featuring responsive voice commands, custom wake-up prompts, remote vehicle telematics, and an interactive digital avatar, seamlessly integrated with Ling ID ecosystem services. Through the companion smartphone app, users can remotely operate the climate control, start the vehicle, lock/unlock doors, control the power windows, schedule charging sessions, and check real-time battery status. The higher-spec four-seater variant comes upholstered in ripple-embossed leatherette seats with 50:50 split-folding rear seats, expanding boot capacity from standard volume up to 734 litres, while the two-seater variant provides a dedicated 450-litre boot space. The cabin is further dotted with 13 practical storage cubbies to handle everyday essentials.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Air EV is built with a high-strength steel cage body structure, with high-tensile steel making up to 62% of the frame. Standard safety kit includes a driver’s airbag, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a reverse camera, and rear parking sensors, with higher-grade four-seater variants adding a front passenger airbag and a 360-degree surround-view monitor. The traction battery pack is rated at IP68 for dust and water ingress protection, having passed rigorous safety evaluations including thermal, water immersion, and crash barrier tests. That said, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) are notably absent, and with modest scores in active AEB crash testing, the car's safety suite remains focused on fulfilling fundamental protection needs.

Market Performance and Reception

As Wuling's pioneer global model, the Air EV made a strong overseas splash, garnering over 4,000 bookings within its first month in Indonesia and serving the 2022 G20 Bali Summit with a dedicated 300-unit EV fleet. Conversely, its domestic performance in China told a different story, shifting only 1,078 units throughout 2025 and dipping to just 2 units in March 2025, lingering near the bottom of the brand's sales charts. Industry analysts attribute this largely to intense competition in the RM60,000 to RM80,000 bracket from strong micro-EV contenders like the Leapmotor T03, Changan Lumin, and Chery Little Ant; a lack of distinct product differentiation amid a heavily crowded segment made it tough to replicate the phenomenal success of the Hongguang MINIEV. Nevertheless, the Air EV remains an important strategic milestone in Wuling’s global footprint and its ambition to move upmarket.
